Week One Recap
Talking the business of sports
At halftime of the first “Sunday Night Football” game of the 2022 NFL season, the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers lead the host Dallas Cowboys 12-3.
Tampa moved the ball with relative ease throughout the half, averaging 6.4 yards per play. But the Bucs saw each of their first three drives stall out deep in Dallas territory before settling for field goal attempts — one of which Ryan Succop hooked to the left. The Cowboys did not get much of anything going offensively after their first drive, registering consecutive three-and-outs before Dak Prescott was picked off by Antoine Winfield Jr. deep in Dallas territory.
But with a chance to score the game’s first touchdown, the Bucs again had to settle for a field goal after Micah Parsons picked up his second sack of the game — both of them on third-down plays inside the 10-yard line. Dallas responded by again quickly punting the ball back to the Bucs, who got into scoring position on their final drive of the half thanks to a monster catch down the right sideline by Julio Jones. But the Bucs stalled out once again, and settled for their fourth field goal of the contest.
Will Tampa hold on to its lead, or will Dallas stage a second-half comeback? Keep it locked to our live blog throughout the second half as we update you with all the stats, scores, and highlights.

This is ugly stuff from a Dallas offense that somehow led the NFL in scoring last year. No Tyron Smith, La’el Collins, Amari Cooper, changes things quite a bit, I suppose.

MIKE EVANS YOU ARE THE CAPTAIN NOW.
@MikeEvans13_ MIKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !!!!!!!!!!! YES
Mike Evans is DIFFERENT 🤯

WOW.

And then Evans beats Trevon Diggs on the goal line fade for a touchdown. Given how bad Dallas’ offense has looked tonight, this two-score lead (with two-point conversions) might be enough to put the game away.
The Bucs keep getting Evans matched up on Anthony Brown and/or Jourdan Lewis and Brady is taking advantage. Easy stuff.

Jayron Kearse came into the week with a back/neck injury but ending up being active. He’s now limping off the field after that last tackle.
Really nice throw by Brady to Mike Evans. Just got it over the arms of a leaping defender. Good blitz pickup by the OL as well.
Tons of room available for Leonard Fournette. Up to 109 yards on 18 carries now. Bucs OL really moving things up front — especially up the middle, which is where the pre-game concerns were focused.

Nothing open at all for Dallas down the field. Everything is inside the 10-yard area close to the line of scrimmage. Hard to move down the field that way.
Football, man
Third time’s a charm?
Tom Brady & Julio Jones (48-yd reception)

🔹 Air Distance: 57.5 yards
🔹 Target Separation: 0.8 yards
🔹 Completion Probability: 23.6%

The pass was Brady’s longest completion by air distance since joining the @Buccaneers and 2nd-longest in the NGS era.#TBvsDAL | #GoBucs pic.twitter.com/XUeHhbJFiT
Brady tried to hit Breshad Perriman deep down the left sideline, but both Trevon Diggs and Malik Hooker got a hand in there to break it up. Great defensive play.
LT Donovan Smith (elbow) & WR Chris Godwin (hamstring) are out for the remainder of the game. pic.twitter.com/1sj5OnDaom
No Donovan Smith for the Bucs, either, so Tom Brady remains without his left tackle.
No Chris Godwin for the Bucs in the second half, and no Conner McGovern for the Cowboys.

The Buccaneers can move, just not in when they sniff the end zone, against the Cowboys. Have to leave that series a little encouraged, however, by Julio Jones showing he can still get downfield. Was a little slow to get up afterward, so his condition later on is worth monitoring. Still, we’re almost halfway through the matchup, and neither side has scored a touchdown.
